Watering
Gazania New Day strictly demands a "drench-and-dry" watering dynamic and behaves with an absolute zero tolerance policy for soggy soil. Once established in the landscape, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant and functions beautifully in water-conserving applications. Always wait until the potting medium or garden soil dries out completely before soaking thoroughly. Because container pots on hot concrete patios lose water rapidly under Steinbach's intense summer sun, verify them regularly, but ensure that drainage ports are completely unobstructed. Stagnant standing water will rapidly result in crown rot and fungal dieback.
Sunlight
This South African cultivar strictly requires maximum full-sun positioning, needing at least 6 to 8 hours of raw, unfiltered solar energy daily. Ample daily UV intensity is the direct mechanical switch required to force its brilliant, multi-colored blossoms to open wide; planting it in shaded environments or underneath low-hanging tree canopies will directly force the flower heads to remain entirely locked shut, while causing the mounded green leaves to stretch and become thin.
Pruning
Maintenance is incredibly straightforward and highly rewarding. While the 'New Day' series naturally preserves a highly manicured, low-mounded shape, routinely practicing deadheading is strongly recommended. Use your fingers or sharp, sanitized micro-snips to cleanly shear away spent, fading flower stems right down to the crown base. This process cleanly preserves the plant's tidy framework and actively prompts the root structure into continuously churning out a non-stop parade of giant new buds all summer long. Note that because the flowers naturally tuck and close at nightfall, this variety is not suitable for interior cut flower vase arrangements.
