Watering
Dahlia 'Dalaya Yogi' prefers consistently moist but highly aerated soil. Because it grows from fleshy underground tubers, it has zero tolerance for waterlogged, soggy mud which rapidly triggers tuber rot. Water deeply at the root zone 1–2 times a week whenever the top 3 cm of soil feels completely dry. Outdoor patio containers exposed to Steinbach's drying summer winds lose water rapidly and may require daily checking, but ensure the drainage holes are never blocked.
Sunlight
This variety demands a prime full-sun location, requiring a minimum of 6 hours of direct, unfiltered daily sunlight. Generous sunshine is the crucial trigger that maintains its dense, mounded habit and fuels the intense, high-contrast pigmentation of its signature rose-red central eye. Growing it in partial shade will cause the stems to stretch, weaken, and significantly reduce the size and frequency of the flower buds.
Pruning
Maintenance is highly rewarding. To prompt a non-stop succession of giant bi-color blooms from July to autumn, practice regular "deadheading"—routinely snip off older, fading flowers down to the next set of healthy leaf nodes. This redirects the plant's energy away from seed production and into heavy new bud sets. In Manitoba, before the first hard freeze in October, withhold water, cut the dying foliage down to 10 cm, carefully dig up the tubers, and store them in dry peat moss in a frost-free basement (around 5°C) to replant next spring.
