Cordyline Red Sister

Cordyline 'Red Sister' prefers a consistently moist but highly aerated soil medium. Water thoroughly until it drains out of the bottom whenever the top 3 cm of the potting mix feels dry. It is highly sensitive to fluoride and chlorine commonly found in municipal tap water, which can cause brown leaf tips; using filtered water or letting tap water sit out for 24 hours is highly recommended. In Steinbach's dry winter indoor environment, ensure the pot never sits in stagnant saucer water to prevent root rot.

To maintain its breathtaking, electric-pink and burgundy coloration, provide bright, indirect sunlight. Indoors, placing it near a large east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid harsh, direct outdoor afternoon sunlight during Manitoba's mid-summer, which can rapidly bleach and scorch its vibrant foliage. Conversely, deep shade will cause the intense pink hues to fade into a dull, muddy green.

This tropical beauty naturally grows with an upright, cane-like habit. Minimal pruning is required. Simply use sharp, sanitized bypass pruners to snip away any older, fading lower leaves near the main stem to maintain an immaculate appearance. If the plant eventually outgrows its indoor space or becomes leggy after a few years, the canes can be cleanly topped in early spring to instantly force a fresh flush of dense, colorful lateral branching lower on the stem.
