Coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) is a species of perennial flowering plant native to tropical and sub-tropical regions of eastern and southern Africa and Asia. It is a low-growing herbaceous plant that can reach 30-40 cm in height and has a spreading habit. It has semi-succulent stems and is grown mainly for its eye-catching and vibrant foliage which varies greatly in color, ranging from purples, reds, oranges, yellows and greens. Its flowers are also quite attractive and are usually white, pink or blue, with a cluster of hairy bracts at the base of each bloom. Coleus is a popular ornamental plant used in gardens, containers, and landscapes, and can be used to create a colorful and versatile display.

Watering
Coleus plants should be watered regularly, but it is important to not over water. Depending on the conditions, such as air temperature and humidity, you can water as often as every 2 or 3 days but make sure the soil is dry between waterings. When watering, give the coleus plant enough water so that it runs out the bottom of the pot. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. If you water too much, the plant can become susceptible to root rot and fungal diseases. Furthermore, in the summer months, you may need to water more often while in the winter you can reduce the amount of water. If the plant isn’t receiving enough water, the leaves will start turning yellow and wilt.
Sunlight
Coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) will thrive best in sunny locations during the warmer months of the year. It needs 4-6 hours of sunlight daily throughout the summer and at least 5-6 hours of partial sunlight during the winter months. Since coleus is a tropical plant, it does not tolerate cold temperatures or frost and should be kept in an area with consistently warm temperatures.
Pruning
To maintain its shape and promote healthy new growth, it is recommended to prune your coleus every 8 to 10 weeks from early spring to late summer. During this time, use sharp clean pruning shears to remove up to a third of the plant's foliage and any dead or diseased branches. Be careful not to prune too extensively, as this can weaken the plant and reduce new growth. After pruning, water your coleus deeply to promote new growth and provide essential nutrition.
