Plant Care Guides

Watering

Coleus 'Campfire' prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil to support its lush, velvety foliage canopy. Water deeply at the base early in the morning whenever the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. While it has decent short-term heat tolerance, severe drought will cause the brilliant leaves to wilt rapidly. Outdoor containers and hanging baskets exposed to Steinbach's drying summer winds lose moisture quickly and may require daily attention during July and August. Always avoid soggy, waterlogged roots.

Sunlight

This advanced hybrid exhibits outstanding sun-tolerance compared to traditional shade-loving coleus varieties. It performs brilliantly in full sun to partial shade (4 to 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily). In Manitoba's climate, ample direct sunlight is highly recommended, as maximum solar energy actively intensifies the rich, glowing copper-orange tones. Growing it in deep, dense shade will result in a more muted, greenish-bronze color profile.

Pruning

Keeping 'Campfire' looking immaculate is incredibly simple. This vegetative variety is specifically bred to be late-flowering, but if any small blue-purple flower spikes begin to emerge in late summer, pinch them off cleanly at the base immediately; this forces the plant to redirect all its energy into growing spectacular, dense leaves rather than setting seed. If the upright frame becomes slightly uneven or leggy by mid-August, lightly shearing back the stem tips will instantly trigger vigorous lateral branching and a flush of fresh foliage.
