Watering
Chinese Fan Palms prefer an even moisture level but are highly sensitive to soggy roots. Water thoroughly until water runs out of the drainage holes, but always allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry out completely before watering again. During the winter months in Steinbach, when indoor heating dries out the air, reduce watering slightly but consider misting the fronds or using a humidifier to prevent dry, brown frond tips. Never allow the pot to sit in a saucer of standing water.
Sunlight
This palm performs best in bright, indirect sunlight. Indoors, place it near a large east- or west-facing window. If moved outdoors to a patio for the short Manitoba summer, place it in a partially shaded area where it is protected from harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can easily bleach and scorch the delicate fan leaves.
Pruning
This plant requires minimal maintenance. Its slow growth rate means you rarely have to manage its size. Avoid the temptation to trim lower fronds too early; only remove a leaf when it has turned entirely brown and dry. Snip the dead stem cleanly near the base of the trunk with sharp, sanitized bypass pruners. Periodically wipe the large, wide fans with a damp cloth to keep them free of indoor dust and looking pristine.
