Begonia Trailing

Trailing Begonias in hanging baskets require meticulous moisture management. Because hanging containers are exposed to drying prairie breezes in Steinbach, they dry out much faster than ground beds. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom holes only when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Never let the container sit in a waterlogged saucer, as trailing begonia stems and underground tubers are highly susceptible to root rot. Always try to water beneath the foliage to keep the cascading blooms dry.

Trailing begonias are the ultimate solution for adding dramatic vertical color to shady spaces. They perform brilliantly in partial shade, receiving gentle morning sunlight and cooling afternoon shade. Avoid placing hanging baskets in harsh, direct afternoon sun, which will rapidly scorch their tender waxy foliage and cause the abundant flower plumes to drop prematurely.

To maintain a breathtaking cascading display, routinely snip away spent, faded blossoms and any yellowing leaves. This clean-up keeps the basket looking pristine and prevents grey mold (botrytis). When planting, notice that begonia leaves have a distinct "pointy" side—aim this side facing outward toward the edge of the basket, as the flowers will naturally trail and open in that exact direction for a fuller look.
