Begonia Nonstop

Nonstop Begonias require careful and consistent watering. The golden rule is to keep the soil evenly moist like a wrung-out sponge, but never waterlogged. Always check the soil manually and water only when the top 2–3 cm of the potting mix feels dry to the touch. Water gently at the base of the plant to keep the dense, double flower plumes and foliage dry, which significantly reduces the risk of powdery mildew and stem rot. Never let the container sit in a saucer filled with standing water.

This series is unparalleled for bringing explosive color to shady spots. It thrives beautifully in partial shade, filtered dappled light, or locations that receive gentle morning sun followed by cooling afternoon shade. While it tolerates slightly more morning brightness than older tuberous types, full, unfiltered afternoon sun in summer will rapidly scorch its delicate petals and leaves. Deep, dense shade will not kill it but may lead to fewer flowers and slightly elongated growth.

Maintenance is relatively straightforward. While the plants are mostly self-cleaning, routinely snipping off older faded blooms and any yellowing leaves will keep the plant looking immaculate and promote a continuous succession of new flower buds. In Manitoba, as the cold October weather approaches, the plant will naturally slow down. If you wish to save the plant for next year, withhold water entirely before the first hard freeze, allow the foliage to die back naturally, and then carefully dig up the tubers to store them in dry peat moss in a frost-free garage or basement over winter.
